Action Art in the second half of the 20th Century. Introductory art history course

AULA DE ADULTOS (ADULTS’ CLASS)

Introductory art history course given by Aina Bauzà

“Action art in the second half of the 20th century” is Es Baluard’s proposal for starting off the 2017-18 academic year of its educational programme, “Aula de adultos” (‘Adults’ Class’).

“Aula de adultos” is a stable programme of educational courses designed to bring contemporary art closer to people in order to generate audiences, habits and training for a public who are not connoisseurs or are oblivious to the world of art.

This year, the programme aims to introduce participants to what is known as “action art”, which was developed from the 1960s on.

The words performance, happening and actionism form part of contemporary vocabulary, but often, we are unable to define their specific meaning. The 1960s saw what Lucy Lippart called “the dematerialization of art” and art as an idea, and art as action made their appearance (Parcerisas, 2007).

The course will consist of giving an introduction to art as an action, art that turns into energy and time-movement. The objective is to make this approach towards art as action understandable for everybody – even though the participants may have no prior knowledge – and we will try to make them feel the experiences that have reached us through documents, videos or images.

Methodology and structure
The course will take place over five sessions each lasting two hours. We shall not view the contents diachronically, but rather in conceptual blocks.

These blocks will be:

  • Happenings by Allan Kaprow, Fluxus, Joseph Beuys and their precedents
  • Suffering, the body, sexuality and illness as other fields of action
  • Action in Spanish conceptual art
  • Action art and feminism

These contents will be contextualised within the historical and social moment. We shall construct a line of events with post-its that will be stuck on the wall.

The methodology will be active and participative. The dissertation will be complemented with readings, viewings of videos or images and the active participation of those attending.
