Marcelo Viquez

Montevideo, Uruguay, 1971

A resident of Palma for almost a decade now, he studied Fine Arts in Montevideo and then Graphic Design in Cuenca. A multidisciplinary artist, he works with drawing, painting, installations, photography and video.

Viquez makes use of his own biography as a creative resource and faces his obsessions, fears, hopes, desires and above all the experiences he has had, which enable him to make a critical portrait of society from a stance which he himself defines as that of an outsider, always with humour and irony. In his paintings and drawings, which are of a figurative nature, he uses the written message as part of the visual language, bestowing more intensity on the work. In his sculptures, which are often recreations of objects, the scale can be disconcerting, and the decontextualization or treatment of the objects turns them into clearly ironical pieces. Photography and video are two languages that are closely linked in his work, and as with the rest of works from other disciplines, they have an autobiographical, social-critical undertone.

Although Marcelo Viquez is an artist with a relatively brief career so far, his works have been exhibited in individual and collective exhibitions in the Centro Cultural Can Gelabert, Binissalem, Mallorca (2004), Centre Cultural la Misericòrdia, Palma (2009), CCA Andratx, Mallorca (2009), and Es Baluard Museu d’Art Modern I Contemporani de Palma (2010). He has taken part in different international fairs such as Art Basel, Art Chicago, Art Cologne and ARCO Madrid, among others. His work is present in collections like those of the Fundación Barceló, Palma, Ajuntament de Palma and Consell de Mallorca.
