Whilst abstraction was one of the great conquests of art in the early 20th century, it was from the middle of the century on that this language, oblivious to naturalist referents, truly hatched out. Having conquered abstract expression, artists threw themselves into experimenting with compositions, shapes, colours, subject matters, constructions or decompositions.
In this small studio, where some of the possible dialogues in abstraction are provoked, we find samples of exercises that explore matter, like those of André Masson or the Mallorcan Juli Ramis; of subtle, lyrical gestures in the most informal expression, an example of which is Jean Fautrier or Hans Hartung; of languages that travel through the territories of geometries and their possible derivations, as in the case of Ramis himself or Pablo Palazuelo; and the expressive potency of the more radical compositions of Nicolas de Staël.
