The “Cartografiem-nos” project has been recognized by the Cathedra UNESCO of Cultural Policies and Cooperation of the Universitat de Girona as one of the most innovative educational programs in Spain.

“Cartografiem-nos” is a transversal, interdisciplinary project that reflects on the region using the tools supplied to us by contemporary artistic practices.

The aim of this project is to develop a critical vision of the natural and/or urban surroundings. We work in the district the school is located in without neglecting the people who live there. We come closer to the landscape in a broad sense, not just as a pictorial genre, but as the medium that surrounds us and in a way, forms part of ourselves. We will need to investigate the district, emphasizing change and different, older people, and also newcomers, the past, the present and the future.

This investigation crystallizes through a work created in entirely contemporary language, a map reflecting the other realities of the district, what children feel is important, what has changed, what they would like to complain about. In short, the children and their educators are the mainstays that create this new cartography. Ultimately it will lead to an exhibition of the works by the participating centre in the museum, and a preliminary exhibition in the district the school belongs to.

Schools wishing to take part in “Cartografiem-nos” must fulfil the following requisites:

  • The project is long-term and involves work for a whole school year.
  • Contact with the teachers begins in the month of September and the diary and work plan is specified up to the month of June.
  • The project addresses the third-cycle primary school age group, and the whole school cycle must be involved if the school wishes to participate.
  • The “Cartografiem-nos” project must become part of the school agenda of the 3rd cycle of primary education in the participating centre.
  • All the teachers involved must take part in a teachers’ training course. The subject matter of the course is art from the 1970s on.
  • Because of the characteristics of the project, only one centre can take part in this project per school year. Therefore if more than one application is received, a selection will be made.
