Festival ME_MMIX 2018

Es Baluard will be one of the venues of a new edition of the ME_MMIX Festival, Festival of electronic music, mixed music and video projection. The museum will host a day that includes two concerts and a round table.
ME_MMIX, aims to create a platform dedicated to the promotion of contemporary creation in the sound and visual field, related to technological innovation, in addition to directing projects related to the sound environment and scenic multidiscipline.
Through the festival, the intention is to make Mallorca a point of reference for contemporary sound and visual creation. The festival is organized by Placa Base, one of the associated groups of Es Baluard.

Instrumental Collective Placa Base
It is an instrumental group of flexible format integrated by musicians from the Balearic Islands or who have had an outstanding relationship in the environment of music of new creation in the Balearic Islands in recent years.
The instrumental group is formed by a balance between musicians of the new generations and musicians with a more extensive trajectory. The point of union is the dedication to the world of music of new creation, all of which have an outstanding international presence. The Mallorcan composer Mateu Malondra Flaquer performs the functions of artistic director of the group.

Mark Knoop
He is a pianist and director. He has worked with composers such as Peter Ablinger, Joanna Bailie, Michael Finnissy, Bernhard Lang, Cassandra Miller, Matthew Shlomowitz and Steven Kazuo Takasugi. Versatile technique and virtuosity also bring new approaches to the standard and repertoire of the twentieth century. Mark performs regularly throughout Europe, the United Kingdom and Australia, and in New Zealand, South Korea, Mongolia, the United States of America, Canada and at festivals that includeBorealis (Bergen), Huddersfield, Klang (Copenhagen), Klangspuren (Schwaz), MaerzMusik (Berlin), Musiikin Aika (Viitasaari, Finland), Spor (Århus), Transit (Leuven), Ukho Music (Kiev) and Ultima (Oslo). Acts with several ensembles, including Plus-Minus (London / Brussels), WeSpoke (London / Lausanne), and Apartment House (London), and has carried out EXAUDI (London), Scenatet (Denmark) and London Sinfonietta. His music recordings of John Cage (Wergo), Morton Feldman (Other Timbre), Bryn Harrison (Other Timbre) and Karlheinz Stockhausen (HatHut) have been acclaimed by critics.
Roderick Chadwick
He is a pianist, teacher and composer. His recent projects include recordings of violin Henzey sonatas de viola with Peter Sheppard Skaerved. Other recordings to date include the Stockhausen Mantra with Mark Knoop and Newton Armstrong. He is a member of ensembles such as Plus-Minus and Chroma, and has recently completed a book on the genesis of the Catalog d’oiseaux de Messiaen with Peter Hill, published early in 2018.
He is a regular performer of Messiaen’s piano works and played the entire Catalog d’oiseaux and La Fauvette des Jardins in concert in 2014. In 2008 he was an artistic advisor to the Real Academia de Música for his participation in the Centennial Festival of Southbank Messiaen Center. Roderick attended the Chetham school in Manchester in the 1980s, studying with the late HeatherSlade-Lipkin, and then moved to London to study with Hamish Milne. He lives in South London and is Reader in Music at the Royal Academy of Music.
Ali Kaaf (Oran, 1977) Resident Artist
Live and work in Berlin. He graduated from the Institut des Beaux-Arts in Beirut, Lebanon, and continued his studies at Universität der Künste (UdK) in Berlin under the supervision of professors Marwan Kassab Bach and Rebecca Horn.
He has received numerous awards since then: in 2004, he was awarded the Interchange Service Award (DAAD) for Outstanding International Students, assigned by UdK in Berlin, and from 2005 to 2006 he worked as a resident artist at Solidere in Beirut. In 2010, he received the MAXXI award from the Association of Young Collectors in Romay in 2014 he was awarded the Honorary Air Award by the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley.
In his multifaceted work, Ali Kaaf develops unique artistic forms that explore point and line, black and white, planes and shapes, rhythm, fire, erosion, light and shadow -processed in different variations in a range of different materials. His paperwork, glass works, video art, installations and photographic works have been shown in numerous solo exhibitions in renowned international venues such as Darat al Funun, the Khalid Shoman Foundation in Amman; the Khan Ashad-Bacha in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut, Damascus; Solidere, Beirut; Galerie Haus am Lützowplatz, Berlin; Galleria Marie-Laure Fleisch in Rome.
