Art en pantalla II : Mayte Gómez Molina

Screen, Mirror and Window: Internet as an Art History Without a Historian

Art en pantalla II is the second part of a program to promote reading and disseminate art history from multiple perspectives. Es Baluard Museu addresses how art is disseminated on social media and other digital platforms.

Writer and new media artist Mayte Gómez Molina takes us on an exploration of the art created in online environments. This tour will consider not only pieces created by artists with an aesthetic or conceptual objective, but also online phenomena created by users without artistic intentions, such as viral actions, YouTube or Twitch streams, memes, shitposting, forum comments, or TikTok. Following in the footsteps of thinkers such as Juan Martín Prada and Valentina Tanni, Gómez Molina asks, and challenges the audience, how a ubiquitous and intangible art can be included in art history, especially when it is unintentionally created. In her talk, she will also recommend some books that have served as sources and guides for her own works, such as Memestética and Prácticas artísticas e internet en la época de las redes sociales by the aforementioned Tanni and Martín Prada, respectively, and others such as Estrella de Diego’s No soy yo: autobiografia, performance y los nuevos espectadores and Jonathan Crary’s Suspensions Of Perception Attention, Spectacle, And Modern Culture.

In its second edition, the Art en pantalla II series will feature Mayte Gómez Molina, along with guests such as Arte compacto, Miguel Ángel Hernández and Lorena Pérez-Jácome.

Mayte Gómez Molina is a writer, researcher, and new media artist who uses digital media as a way to expand her writing. Although she uses literary techniques to create “book” objects in the traditional sense, she also explores the possibilities of reading and writing through 3D and virtual reality. Her book Los Trabajos sin Hércules won the Miguel Hernández National Young Poetry Prize in 2023. She is a professor at the Basel Academy of Art and Design (FHNW).
