BIENNAL B

BIENNAL B is an initiative promoted by Es Baluard Museu together with the Consell de Mallorca, which launches interdisciplinary creative projects that foster collaboration between contemporary artists and craft professionals committed to sustainable development, crafts, traditions and landscape.

BIENNAL B is developed around three main axes: interdisciplinary creative projects, ecological and cultural connectivity actions and an International Conference of Art, Culture and Science.

> CREATIVE INTERDISCIPLINARY PROJECTS

Through exhibitions, site-specific interventions and performative actions, collaboration will be fostered between contemporary artists and craft professionals committed to sustainable development, crafts, traditions and landscape.

> ECOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL CONNECTIVITY ACTIONS

BIENNAL B aims to foster ecological connectivity and ecosystem resilience in collaboration with other cultural institutions on the island, from the local to the universal, through land care practices, traditional crafts and actions related to marine ecosystem protection.

These actions include a Hub of culture and citizen science and the Suelo Mallorca initiative, coordinated by Ela Spalding.

> INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ART, CULTURE AND SCIENCE – BIENNAL B

Es Baluard Museu’s Aljub will host the first International Conference on Art, Culture and Science – BIENNAL B on November 7 and 8, 2025. This meeting will bring together experts to propose models of responsible transformation, will address issues such as cultural innovation, economic development, ecology and heritage, in line with the 17 UN SDGs and will evaluate what was presented at BIENNAL B the previous months.

With the support of academic and scientific institutions and intercultural dialogue as its purpose, BIENNAL B aims to be a transformative initiative and to this end it seeks to attract key figures from different disciplines, from the humanities to the sciences, incorporating experts with a multidisciplinary approach to create an enriching dialogue on environmental challenges and cultural evolution.

ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL IMPACTS

In addition to its artistic and scientific approach, BIENNAL B is committed to leaving a positive footprint on the territory, integrating sustainability in each phase of the project. The strategy is articulated along key lines such as ecosystem regeneration, circular economy, cultural heritage conservation, education and awareness, diversity and inclusion, knowledge transfer and regenerative governance. To measure its real impact, more than 50 indicators (KPIs) have been defined to evaluate progress in areas such as:

  • Heritage conservation: number of heritage sites identified and activated through participatory mapping.
  • Transmission of traditional knowledge: number of people involved in land custody processes and intergenerational transmission of knowledge.
  • Cultural impact: number of artistic and cultural proposals generated around local heritage.
  • Citizen participation: number of people involved in educational and citizen science actions.
  • Social impact: diversity in programming and participation of vulnerable groups.
  • Intersectoral collaboration: number of partnerships established between cultural, scientific and social institutions.
  • Knowledge transfer: number of collaborative projects between artists, artisans and local communities that incorporate traditional knowledge and contemporary approaches.
  • Perception and collective memory: level of knowledge and positive perception of the community about their heritage before and after the activities, measured through surveys and interviews.

All this information will be collected in a final report, which will document lessons learned, methodologies and best practices, with the aim of replicating and scaling up the impact of BIENNAL B in future editions.
