Cinematographic visions of illness
We present a series of sessions held in public hospitals of Mallorca as part of the Nomad Section of the first FICAE (International Festival of Short Films and Art on Illnesses) organised by the Art and Illness Department of the Universitat Politècnica de València and as one of the Es Baluard’s clear commitments to working in diverse social spheres and spaces. This themed festival aims to promote social awareness and sensitize people on illness as a life process, and to destigmatize certain illnesses through visions that reach beyond prejudice or ignorance. In this case, and on our island, they have been framed within the stable programmatic line of Art and Health by the Es Baluard museum, organised together with the participation of EPSAL (Espai de psicologia i salut – Psychology and health space).
This section of the festival presents a selection of the short films entered in the competition and divided into four thematic blocks, through screenings with debates afterwards. The aim of this is to try and respond to questions we feel must continue to be put forward, in this case in collaboration with different social and health agents from patients’ associations and hospitals themselves. The reality of four large groups of illnesses – sexually-transmitted diseases, mental health disorders, autoimmune diseases and oncological diseases – will be analysed, conducted through a cinematographic gaze.
In parallel, a group of university students form the Faculty of Nursing and Physiotherapy of the UIB will carry out educational activities around the project.
These sessions will be held in four of Mallorca’s public hospitals: Manacor Hospital, Hospital Comarcal of Inca, Son Llàtzer Hospital and Son Espases University Hospital.
To conclude, a session will be arranged in Es Baluard Museu d’Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma, with the aim of presenting the conclusions of the debates held in each of the hospitals, and with representatives from them and from the world of film, such as the well-known Jordi Costa.
Throughout the whole week these sessions last, in the Intermedi space of Es Baluard Museu d’Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma, during normal opening hours, people will be able to see a selection of the films presented in the official section of FICAE in the 2014 festival.
