Es Baluard in the program that carries out support for special editions and artist books presents “Teatro dentífrico” by its author, Javier Peñafiel. A special meeting with elements of a theatrical nature, which will be introduced by the renowned curator Juan de Nieves.

“Teatro dentífrico” is an edition that is inspired by the Modellbuch (model books) by Bertold Brecht, in which collage was fundamental, pretending to be a pocket edition, a kind of notebook so that those who bring it with them can dialogue with the artist and leave between his pages written comments and drawings inspired by suggestions from photographs and texts, which function as aphorisms proposed by the artist.

Javier Peñafiel prefers to work long-term projects such as Egolactante (1997-2007), Agencia de intervención en la sentimentalidad (1997-2001) or the most recent Heartbeat antecedent (2009-2013) -books and notebooks expanded in multimedia collage and dramatized readings-. Since 1997, he has produced and edited: Escritorio, Mera coincidencia, Os acasos convenientes, Agenda de caducidad de los tiempos drásticos (28 Bienal de São Paulo), Locution Merkel Bachelet. His books and publications Conquista básica, te vuelvo a pedir que te definas; CRU006 or No todo tanto Fine Arts Unternehmen, are always linked to projects. He has written theater plays for video such as Tragedia de las corporaciones. Ignorancia (2000), Voz Contraria (2009) and Palacio Polifonía (2010). His priority, since 2010, is to make specific drawing samples, produced by traveling through residences and what he calls Confedramas, hybrid voice and text proposals, with video as a device for theater.

Juan de Nieves has a degree in History of Modern and Contemporary Art from the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1987. Conservator of the Galician Center of Contemporary Art between 1994 and 1998. Exhibition technician in the Consortium of Museums of the Valencian Community in 1998-99. From this moment, he joined the Espai d’art contemporani de Castelló as Artistic Director of the institution since the end of 2004. Later he was artistic director of Rupert (Vilnius, Lithuania), a center of studies and residences of artists, as well as director of the Contemporary Art Fair SUMMA in Madrid. Between 2015 and 2016 he was a guest curator at Artpace, San Antonio, Texas, International Residency Center. Since the mid-nineties he has worked as an exhibition curator for individual projects (Rosa Barba, Isidoro Valcárcel Medina, André Guedes, Daniel Buren, Miguel Ventura, Angel Vergara, Dora García, Rubén Ramos Balsa, Paloma Polo, Daniel García Andújar, etc.) as collectives. He has given conferences and workshops in different institutions both in Spain and in Europe, the United States and Latin America, among others the University of Santiago de Compostela; Cultural Center of Spain in Montevideo; Meadows School of the Arts, Dallas; École des BeauxArts de Perpignan; Artistic Research Center, Buenos Aires; etc. He is currently working on a cycle of public sphere projects for the city of A Coruña, whose first block titled “Xeography, memory and civic capital” is still in progress. He is also preparing a retrospective individual exhibition with Paloma Polo, which will take place at the CA2M in 2019.
