El Centenni

On March 12, 2024 at 10.30 am, it will take place in Es Baluard Museu the public presentation of the first issue of EL CENTENNI. The newspaper, as a time capsule, presents the news of 2124.

This diary is the result of the collective work carried out between November and December 2023 by a group of senior citizens led by artist Sergio Monje.

Based on the exhibition “Romeos, luchadorxs e insecto” by the artist Dora García, a project has been carried out jointly with various groups of elderly people. This project is part of Es Baluard’s GranGent/GentGran program which, from its social and educational scope, aims to respond to the group of elderly people. With GranGent/GentGran, the knowledge of the group is valued by offering them quality cultural activities, thus promoting active aging.

The group of people meets at Es Baluard Museu to collectively edit the first publication of a new newspaper, El Centenni. However, it is not an ordinary newspaper: this publication has the particularity of being published only once every 100 years. The Centenni collects, as a time capsule, the news that we wish there would be when the next publication comes out, in the year 2124. Desire, memory, the personal and the collective are intertwined and projected in a speculative time, in other temporalities, in ink and newsprint.

The activity is designed and conducted by Sergio Monje (Palma, 1994), visual artist. His artistic research practice, developed in different media, has as its thematic axes work, representation, technology, desire, and, in recent years, tourism. He graduated in Fine Arts at the Universitat de Barcelona and continued his studies in Literature, Art and Thought at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. He has developed artistic projects in several art centers, such as Azkuna Zentroa, Etopia Centro de Arte y Tecnología, Casa Planas, Casal Solleric, Sala d’Art Jove, Can Felipa, MNAC or Centrum (Berlin).
