Es Baluard Museu organizes the public conference “(Im)possibility of the List*: reflections and knots on the violence of representation, unfortunate complicity and selfish compassion” by Banu Cennetoğlu within the framework of the “Contact Zone” programme.

In this presentation, the artist will present part of her work in relation to the list, compiled and updated each year by UNITED Intercultural Action since 1993, the List traces information relating to the (mostly preventable) deaths of 44764 people who have killed within or on the borders of Europe due to state policies (documented as of 1 June 2021). Between 2007-2020, in collaboration with art workers and institutions, Cennetoğlu has facilitated updated versions of the document using public spaces such as billboards, transport networks and newspapers.

Banu Cennetoğlu proposes this reflection, in an activity open to all audiences, as the starting point for module 4 of the LAP program (Laboratory of Art and Thought) in its first edition. In this thematic block entitled Deconstructing borders, decolonizing knowledge, we start from the complexity of human mobility processes, migrations and borders, phenomena that challenge institutional logics and put our democracies to the test, to address current migratory movements and the real situation of vulnerability in which most migrants find themselves, and how to deal with the situation of economic and social helplessness of people who request international asylum. Because we are facing one of the greatest challenges as a society: the construction of a fair and sustainable world, where the security, dignity, human rights and fundamental freedoms of humanity are respected.

“Contact Zone” is an annual training and research program that aims to explore the potential of artistic practice and cultural production as devices for intervention in social change. In its first edition, the need to think about contemporary complexity is presented from five thematic axes: New Institutions, Ecologisms, Feminisms, Borders and Works.
