NON-HEGEMONIC MASCULINITIES 2

Within the lines of research on gender, for yet another year Es Baluard becomes a meeting place for reflecting on non-hegemonic masculinities, a platform for speaking on the basis of this necessary focus within the framework of egalitarian policies.

The activity begins with a visit to the Aljub, where participants can see the work Rumi, by Narcisa Hirsch (an artist linked to feminist movements, experimental film creator and politician), which shows a masculine figure in reference to the thoughts of Rumi, the well-known 13th-century mystical Muslim poet, whose general theme was essentially focussed towards Tawheed (or unity, global harmony), connected at all times to people’s personal and spiritual growth, the evolution of the masculine and the feminine. Nekane Aramburu, director of Es Baluard and curator of the exhibitions, will extract different reflections and core concepts to initiate the talk and give way to the participation of the guests. In this way different complementary attitudes towards non-hegemonic masculinities will be shaped. Afterwards the debate will be opened up to the audience.

Pep Estarelles will speak to us from the individual, based on his experience and personal positioning. A man and a father who has questioned the traditional model fo masculinity for some time, and in his function within the framework of the couple, he became the main caregiver for his daughter. He is a graphic designer and sportsman and is committed to cultural and natural heritage. He is president of the associations Amics de la Vall de Coanegre.

Meritxell Esquirol is a cultural analyst. She is a doctor in Human Sciences, Social and Institutional Communication with the thesis “Femininit, neo-liberalism and popular culture: the de-politicisation of feminism”. She will explain what the participation and social promotion processes of men and women are in our society, an androcentric society governed by the economic and cultural project of neo-liberalism. This model of society on the one hand regulates and organises the uses of time of men and women unequally, according to principles of profitability. And on the other hand, this neo-liberal model often regulates care intervention processes which in a way dilute the social responsibility implied by thinking of a world where masculinities and femininities can be experienced in conflict: as long as women are (over)victimised and (over)sexualised and active, proactive and competent femininity is not promoted, masculinity tends to be represented according to paternalistic, protective, controlling and active attitudes.

Pere Fullana Falconer, a man in research, in personal deconstruction, an activist on the roads and gazes that give light, strength and knowledge, feminisms. He holds a diploma in Social Work and is a graduate of Sociology and Political Science, and his intervention will deal with a range of subjects from the need to abandon the corset imposed on men by the patriarchy, the necessary process to admit the transition towards non-hegemonic masculinities and the benefits it entails; and, amongst other reflections, he will analyse for us how traditional male chauvinism continuously regenerates (e.g. metrosexual model, spornosexual model, etc), from the marketplace, amongst many deception strategies set in motion by the dominant powers.
