PAISATGES SOSTENIBLES D’ES BALUARD (SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPES)

We are starting up a new edition of the “Paisatges Sostenibles” (‘Sustainable Landscapes’) project, an initiative that began in 2014 with the support of the Fundación José Navarro aimed at constructing new spaces for reflection and action linked to today’s society and responsible awareness practices in Es Baluard.

In its Rationale, Es Baluard defines the museum as a commonly-owned asset that should be a paradigm of respect for euqality on all levels, and of the rights of living beings, for the purpose of contributing to a more sustainable, caring planet, maintaining respect for environmental resources and ecology on the basis of education in the areas of civic values, social commitment and engaged culture.

This year sees the consolidation of a programme that is pioneering on our islands due to its innovative nature, in line with its intention to create links between culture, the environment and sustainable development. Last year a variety of activities were organised, ranging from trainings and talks on landscaping, permaculture, environmental education, sustainability, to performances, screenings of art-activist projects advocating social change, and installations. Relevant figures collaborated with the programme, such as Eduardo Kac, Josep Pàmies or Olafur Eliasson, and organisms like Slow Food, Coa Negra, Jardí Botànic de Soller, Fundació per la vida Poc a Poc, etc.

2015-2016 PROGRAMME

  • A new cycle begins, as is tradition by now, with the viewing of the phenomenon of the Winter Solstice, this time on 19th December. (More information)

  • On 12th January at 6:30 pm, we will be giving a preview of the Reflecta International Festival that we will be celebrating for another year at Es Baluard in June. The short film finalists for 2015 will be projected, and the competition bases for the 2016 (Art)Activista Reflecta Prize will be presented. Free activity. (More information)

  • On 26th January at 6.30 pm, we will inaugurate the Zona Huerto (garden area) on the upper terrace of Es Baluard. A new space for exchanging seeds and knowledge. An information point with a panoramic view of the island’s biodiversity will be prepared in collaboration with Associació Varietats Locals. Free Activity.

  • On 27th February from 10 am to 2 pm, continuing with the Paisatges Sostenibles (Sustainable Landscapes), Es Baluard is activating a pilot proposal under name of “Green and Play”. The activity consists of a training course for educators focussing on how to set up an ecological vegetable garden in schools, and how it can be related to and included in the different curricular areas (science, mathematics, art, language…). The workshop will include a theoretical introduction section and another part during which some of the proposals put forward will be put into practice. The aim of the idea of creating a school garden is to raise awareness of human health and that of the equilibriums of the environment amongst pupils and the educational community in general through direct contact with the land; and also for them to discover the source of products, understanding the importance of consuming locally-produced, ecological, seasonal produce. Imparted by: Manuel Segura Fuster, pre-school teacher. He also participates as an educator in cooperation projects with Central American countries, and in courses on ecological gardens in schools in Mallorca. Free activity. No vacancies.

  • On 4th March at 7:00 pm, a conference will be given on “Ecofeminism” with Ruth Escribano, coordinator of the Oficina de Cooperació al Desenvolupament i Solidaritat (Office of Cooperation for Development and Solidarity) of the UIB. Ecofeminism is a trend of thought that defends the construction of an ecological, decentralised, non-hierarchical and non-militarized society with internal democracy in which the use of technologies that are more respectful of the environment prevail with life at its core. Free Activity.

  • 3rd April, in collaboration with the GOB, we are organising a visit to the Sierra de Tramuntana with advance enrolment at programesbaluard@gmail.com. On a guided excursion, visitors will discover the natural and cultural values of Trapa, a property the GOB acquired in the '80s in order to preserve and protect it. Once at the estate, an environmental volunteering action will take place aimed at the reforestation of aromatic plants which contribute to the ecological recovery of the property and at the same time knowledge will be shared regarding their uses for health and other benefits they provide. The results and documentation of the process will be visible in the Zona Huerto of the museum’s upper terraces. The excursion will start at 9 am in Palma finishing at 2 pm. Free Activity.

  • "Campo adentro/IN LAND" is a project about an organization and collaboration platform initiated by Fernando García-Dory. It will be presented in Es Baluard on 18th May at 7.30 pm, as an activity of the International Museum Day, which this year is titled "Museums and Cultural Landscapes". "Campo adentro/IN LAND" started in 2010 by opening a space for reflection and artistic creation on territories, geopolitics, culture and identity in rural-urban relations, working with 22 artists in many other towns across the country, exhibitions, conferences and publications. Currently, the project takes the form of para-institution as an economic and cultural structure for an alliance between artists and rural communities. Free admission until full capacity. (More information)

  • On 7th June, at 9:30 pm, we will present Reflecta 2016, the international video-activism festival, during which the best selection of video art short films committed to the environment and social change will be screened. Projection in original language version with subtitles in English. Free Activity. (More information)

  • And finally we will bring the sound installation Charrúa, by Gustavo Tabares, to the museum, part of the Latin America Pavilion of the 2015 Venice Biennale. The piece by this renowned Uruguayan artist consists of a reflection on identities, transnationalities and globalisation processes through sound recordings. Those interested will be able to visit it in the Aljub from 6th October until the end of November 2016. The visit with the artist will be on 5th October at 7.00 pm. (More information)
