Workshop Robert Cahen: "Missions artístiques a la Serra de Tramuntana"

Es Baluard and the Consorci Serra de Tramuntana are organising a joint project under the name of “Missions artístiques a la Serra de Tramuntana” (‘Artistic missions in the Serra de Tramuntana’). The project begins on 29th September with a conference by the renowned French video-creator Robert Cahen, leading into a workshop on the scenery of the village of Deià on 30th September and 1st and 2nd October.

This workshop is organised around a theoretical/practical live-in symposium taking a mountain refuge as its space for working on the basis of Cahen’s work: the sequence shot in his work, filming or moving painting, carrying out analytical research with the participants.

The workshop is also structured as an exercise in pedagogy of cultural heritage and is open to professional creators or those who are becoming professionals and who are interested in image and movement, photography, video and the relationship of the former with the space-time crossings of nature and the landscape.

A look at the landscape, the peculiar orography and light discovered by classic landscape painters will be analysed through different video recordings – a trip from the external gaze to the internal, between the visible and the invisible. This creator’s work has been recognised for the way in which it signifies the journey, decoding the layers of reality of the territories awaiting discovery, amongst other aspects.

The conference is open to all and enrolment is required for the workshop, which will be carried out in group cohabitation in the refuge of Can Boi in Deià. (Languages: French and English)

Enrolment costs 30 euros (10% discount for Amics d’Es Baluard – Friends of Es Baluard) and includes accommodation and board. Those interested should send a letter of intent with an initial idea of the project to be developed along with a work portfolio, by 10th September. Those selected will be informed of their participation from 12th September on.

Robert Cahen

The French creator Robert Cahen (1945) is one of the most representative artists in terms of the moving image and / or video image for capturing the landscape. His experience executing projects of this kind throughout Latin America, Asia and Europe make his perspective on the landscape unique and exceptional, to the point of converting it into something transcendental.

He is also one of the pioneers of art history in the disciplines of video and the documental and experimental image. On the pedagogical side, his key research points are light, movement and textures. Based on the real image, he creates interpretations generating new fictions and interpretations of a poetical nature, and even a narrative one on occasions, in a way that nobody else achieves.

A retrospective of his work was held in Spain at the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (1999). Moreover, his work was recently acknowledged by the Centro La Virreina, under the curatorship of Eugeni Bonet.

As a result, from the very heart of Tramuntana, a UNESCO world heritage landscape, the artist will transmit his knowledge and reflections on the practice of taking images and ways of seeing through an intensive, participatory workshop in which image and place will be analysed.
