GLÒRIA MAS

Es Baluard Museu d’Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma presents the installation Aporia by the Mallorcan artist Glòria Mas. With this montage, created specifically for the Aljub hall, the artist transfers some of the problems of our society to the ambience of plastic creation. Glòria Mas proposes that spectators reflect on the near-insuperable difficulty of resolving certain problems inherent in humanity, such as violence and the conflicts of interests that give rise to wars and lead to irrational conduct.

In order to conceptually“visualize” this concern Glòria Mas created a kind of labyrinth, constructing a forest of crystal tears – items made in a traditional Mallorcan crafts factory – accompanied by two audiovisual projections, one at each end of the Aljub. To one side, a compilation sequence of scenes from documentaries showing the everyday savagery of our times. To the other, the purifying sea. The tears are “bathed” by the images projected from both sides.

In the case of Glòria Mas, the interesting aspect of a material such as glass is fundamentally its transparency effects, which enable her to play, as in previous works, with the reflections of the light, shadows and superimposition of the images projected to shape a singular, somewhat disturbing environment. In short, with Aporia Glòria Mas attempts to stage a set of problems that she perceives from her own sensitivity, transferring it to the realm of what is public and universal.
