JASON MARTIN

Jason Martin (Jersey, United Kingdom, 1970), one of the most international of British artists, presents his first big individual exhibition on the Balearic Islands, "Nomad", a display organised by Es Baluard in collaboration with the CAC (Contemporary Art Centre) and with the sponsorship of Caja Mediterráneo CAM.

Linked to the Young British Artists (YBA), as a result of his participation in the exhibition "Sensation" (1997) at the initiative of collector Charles Saatchi, Jason Martin is the furthest removed from a group formed by the Chapman brothers, Damien Hirst and Sarah Lucas, which set transgression, provocation and irony as its goals.

The selection includes seven monochromatic paintings produced between 2005 and 2007, in which one can appreciate the artist’s great mastery of technique, when he emphasizes the action of painting by applying oil on large surfaces of aluminium or stainless steel, following an ordered, rational rhythm, until reaching the wealth of details and nuances that characterise his works.

In this exhibition, Martin pays tribute to the figure of Caspar David Friedrich, one of the maximum exponents of German Romanticism, with the work View over Arkona with Rising Moon (1806) as a starting point. Martin takes up Friedrich’s interest in the search for effects produced by changing light and his synthetic capacity between figuration and abstraction, to show us his own particular vision of nature with an aura of mysticism, as can be seen in Lebanon, Feral or Dutch, among other works.
