Joan Morey. The Characters

At a time of social tension, subjects have regained their use of the “public voice” in a radical manner to express their malaise, ideology or disagreement with a series of events that are upsetting the structure of society. In our present age, the use of language has been amplified by the new technologies which, whilst serving as a mouthpiece for “democratic power”, have nevertheless failed to replace the real space for freedom of expression and the declaration of citizens’ opinions.

THE CHARACTERS is a project by Joan Morey which collects these “grammatical” changes and behaviours in the use of language to interpose them onto other forms of artistic communication in which the message, word or text is displayed less directly and in a habitually dysfunctional way.

The project is carried out in three artistic formats (site-specific, installation and performance) and in three different places (a window display in El Corte Inglés, the Gabinet space at Es Baluard and a public space in Palma) with the aim of obtaining a changing work that experiments with several communication spaces and different types of spectators.

From 19 September, 2015 to 10 January, 2016: installation in the Gabinet space at Es Baluard.
