La paraula pintada

LA PARAULA PINTADA

The exhibition "La paraula pintada", devoted to "painter-writers", invites visitros to discover paintings, drawings and engravings of great writers whose artistic vocation has, in most cases, been given little airing in our country. Organized and produced by Es Baluard Museu d'Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma, the exhibition brings together outstanding personalities of European literature, novelists, playwrights and poets from Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Great Britain and Sweden.

Those chosen are essentially writers from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, and include: Rafael Alberti, William Blake, Joan Bonet, Antonio Buero Vallejo, Dino Buzzati, Camilo José Cela, Jean Cocteau, Feliu Elías “Apa”, Federico García Lorca, Günter Grass, Hermann Hesse, Victor Hugo, Pierre Loti, Archduke Lluís Salvador, Apel·les Mestres, Henri Michaux, Benito Pérez Galdós, Alfonso Rodriguez Castelao, Santiago Rusiñol, George Sand, Bruno Schulz, August Strindberg and Roland Topor.

This selection brings together figures from the history of literature whose artistic facet has not received widespread attention in our country. This is the case, among others, of the oil paintings by the Italian novelist Dino Buzzatti – the hundredth anniversary of whose birth is being celebrated this year; the drawings by the Polish writer Bruno Schulz, on show for the first time in Spain; of the watercolours by Herman Hesse (winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946); of the exotic landscapes of the French novelist Pierre Loti and the drawings and watercolours of the writer George Sand.

The exhibition La paraula pintada, thus entitled in tribute to Tom Wolfe, has been created by Marie-Claire Uberquoi, director of the Es Baluard and organiser of the presentation, and by the historian and journalist Rai Ferrer, the project’s literary adviser.

Produced by Es Baluard Museu d’Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma, “La paraula pintada” brings together a total of  154 works, including paintings, drawings, engravings and watercolours which have been lent by collectors and museums from various European countries, such as the Musée National d’Art Moderne Centre Pompidou, the Musée d’Orsay, La Maison de Victor Hugo in Paris, the Fondazione Hermann Hesse in Montagnola (Switzerland), the Muzeum Literatury im Adama Mickiewicza in Warsaw, Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) and the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid, among others.
