LIGHT MESSAGES

The exhibition "Light Messages" presents in Es Baluard the work of the Spanish artists  Chema Alvargonzález (Jerez de la Frontera, 1960-Berlin, 2009), Daniel Canogar (Madrid, 1964) and Bernardí Roig (Palma, 1965). All of them began their artistic careers in the late nineteen-eighties, and took part in the development of plastic creation of the decade of the ‘nineties with research in the field of photography and multimedia art. Through a set of thirteen works, sculptures and installations, the exhibition refers us, from different stances, to the human condition and the relationship of man with his environment, using technological resources, with light as the main feature.

The selection, made by Marie-Claire Uberquoi, reflects the preoccupations surrounding the solitude, decadence and existential anguish of the human being of the Mallorcan artist Bernardí Roig, based on his installations and sculptures with the human figure accompanied by neon tubes or projections, with a strong literary and cinematographic component.  Man is also the centre of the work of Daniel Canogar, in this case from his reflection on the influence of the hyper-technological world on our future; fibre optics and photolytic materials alongside other, more commonplace ones such as wood or methacrylate, form his spectacular installations. The relationship between man and the urban surroundings is the main theme Chema Alvargonzález works on, always on the basis of a complex research process in which other disciplines, such as anthropology or sociology, intervene. The light reflected by his words created with luminous signs accompany him on a route through different cities, including Palma, and become his instrument for making the places that interest him "visible", places he photographs and turns into light boxes, thus erasing the line that separates painting and photography.
