Past Continuous. Es Baluard Collection
The exhibition “Past Continuous. Es Baluard Collection”, organised by the Institut Valencià de Cultura and presented in the Espai d’Art Contemporani de Castelló, is set forth as a journey in time which unites strata of memory, developed in a rhizomatic way, between works that allude to different social, economic, historical and emotional components, taking the Mediterranean as their epicentre, as the cradle of civilisation and counterpoint of the relationship between East and West. Return trips, thinking of the dividing of time and dystopia, a characteristic inherent in the latest reviews of the Es Baluard Collection.
Continuing with its objective of promoting the works in its collection and sharing them, on a transversal basis, with diverse interlocutors, Es Baluard enters into collaboration with the EACC of Castellón, following its line of exhibition scheduling centred on the presentation of museum collections. Es Baluard, the reference museum of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands, is constantly aware of its geographical coordinates as a challenge and an opportunity, both immersed in history and looking to the future, as a catalyst and an emitter of research and training proposals through its programme of exhibitions, activities and educational cycles.
As well as being a space and a living laboratory for the analysis and production of present-day cultural practices, the museum becomes a container for the traces and marks left by culture, the great archive of the tangible and the intangible, and the custodian of its heritage. Located in the city of Palma, since opening to the public in 2004 this museum of contemporary art has preserved a reserve of over 700 artworks – which come from the organisms Ajuntament de Palma, Consell de Mallorca, Govern de les Illes Balears and Fundació d’Art Serra, along with long-term loans and donations from collectors, entities and artists and acquisitions made by the museum itself – produced between the late 19th century and the present day, and with links to artists who are from the ambience of the islands and/or international names.
