Es Baluard Museu d'Art Contemporani de Palma presents its candidature to join the 2022 annual congress CIMAM - International Committee of Museums and Collections of Modern and Contemporary Art, the only worldwide association of experts in museums in modern and contemporary art.
The proposed dates presented by Es Baluard Museum for these professional conferences are from November 9 to 13, 2022. At the CIMAM conference in 2021, which will be held in Poland next November, the venue of the congress will be announced 2022, as well as 2023.
The candidacy competes with different cities in the world and presents a proposal based on the three lines of research that strengthen the Museum's identity. These are “Collection. Archive and Visual Memory", "City. Art and Communities” and “Imaginaries and visualities”. At the same time, the lines are traversed by all the epochal issues that are part of our contemporaneity, such as feminisms, migrations or the environment.
In this sense, the Museum defends a sustainable organizational model with a proposal that highlights how the infrastructures that characterize the Balearic Islands allow an annual congress with the minimum ecological footprint, with one of the best connected airports in Europe and access to other spaces and institutions with minimum distances.
In turn, in 2022 it also coincides with the Documenta contemporary art contest and the Venice Biennale, which can make it easier for Palma to connect with other European cities and thus reduce trips.
The Director of Es Baluard Museu, Imma Prieto, points out that the candidacy "implies understanding that our role is key when facing the challenges that the 21st century presents. Museums are spaces that, above all, generate knowledge and activate a critical spirit. This is why the congress becomes the ideal structure to promote and exchange ideas, objectives and needs with the sole purpose of nurturing our societies from their plurality and diversity, as well as to face together the transformations that the future requires with urgency".
"This candidacy confirms that we cannot understand Es Baluard Museum just as an exhibition space, but rather as a living museum that addresses the important issues of today. The Government of the Balearic Islands firmly support this candidacy and believe in the role that Es Baluard Museum plays in society. From the Culture area we continue to develop joint programs to favor, for example, experimentation in the performing arts or the social inclusion of young people. Congratulations to its Director, Imma Prieto, and to the entire team for the work. The Government will continue working alongside him in more projects", explains Miquel Company i Pons, Minister of European Funds, University and Culture of the Government of the Balearic Islands.
The president of the Consell de Mallorca and president of the Es Baluard Museu Board of Trustees, Catalina Cladera, expressed her satisfaction that the Consell is part of a candidacy that "is a great opportunity for Palma, for Mallorca and for the Balearic Islands and that could convert Baluard Museum is the world cultural and museum capital and an international benchmark in this space for reflection that is the annual CIMAM conference". In this sense, "the candidacy is the result of the good work done in Es Baluard Museum both to weave a network in Mallorca and the Balearic Islands and with a view to external projection", she concludes.
On the other hand, the general director of Cultural Diffusion of the City Council of Palma, Marcos Augusto, highlights "the work led by the Museum to host the CIMAM, as well as the impact that, in case of winning the candidacy, it will have for the entire artistic fabric and for other museums that clearly complement the offer that the city offers, such as the Fundació Miró or Casal Solleric".
