Animal, a large-format work produced in 1996, is a clear example of the creative construction processes and mechanics that Darío Villalba has followed in his artistic production: he extracts images from files and magazines, or uses photographs he himself has taken, decontextualizes them and turns them into iconographic objects. Painting and photography are fused, the image of the otter becomes a symbol when enlarged and intervened upon, becoming more involved in the intent than in the action, with total freedom of language.

Villalba selects this fragment of the image of the animal, transforming the innocent image of this being and giving rise to a disturbing vision that refers to a period in which his work, in his own words, “flowed from the interior to the exterior as though it were an open wound that has been clinically controlled. Thus this animal which ejects paint from its mouth is the prototype of numerous works in which things that have been devoured subsequently come out on the surface”
