Architecture and the portrait (both individual and collective) are the two mainstays of the work of Roland Fischer. Produced in 2007, Zhu Zhu # 4088 forms part of an extensive group of large-format female portraits, “Chinese Pool Portraits”, the composition of which reminds us of the series “Los Angeles Portraits” (1989-1993): on this occasion the model, is submerged in the water of a pool created inside two studios in Beijing and Shanghai. In this way Fischer limits the attention paid to the female face, and he also uses an infinite monochrome background. He isolates her from their geographical context and suspends her in time and space, abandoning any kind of individual reference.

Lives and works in Munich and Beijing. He defines photography as a medium linked to painting through which he achieves the direct representation of the visible world with the help of digital tools. The two axes that form the backbone of his work are firstly the portrait, and then architecture, making what we cannot see of reality visible, always using resources such as the reduction of the composition and the extension of the format, objectivity both in one genre and the other, or the development of exhaustive series which he abandons and resumes discontinuously, but not seen as repetition but rather as variations on a single theme. His collective portraits, initiated during his first stay in China, are the fruit of his exploration of the individual society relationship, whilst the well-known individual portraits, such as “Chinese Pool Portraits”, respond to his desire to isolate the subject from his or her geographical context, suspending them in time and space and decontextualizing them by submerging them in water, for example.This same intention of fleeing from all spatial and temporal reference can be found in his works related to architecture, for example in the “Façades” series, where he cancels out the merely descriptive function and breaks with the association of image and reality, turning the captured motif into abstract compositions. Fischer has exhibited works in the Musée d’art modern de la Ville de Paris (1989, 2007), the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea in Santiago de Compostela (2003), the Pinakothek der Moderne (Munich, 2003), the Museo de Arte Contemporánea in Vigo (2008) and the Domus Artium of Salamanca (2011), among others. His work forms part of important collections such as those of the Centro de Arte Caja de Burgos, Artium de Álava (Vitoria), the Musée d’art moderne et contemporain in Strasbourg, the Institut Valencià d’Art Modern (Valencia), the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (Vienna) and the musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris.
