“Romeos, luchadorxs e insecto” by Dora García (Valladolid, 1965), curated by Pilar Rubí, presents four linked projects that question history, social conduct and the function of a museum, and which explore the artist’s lines of work based on the exploration of the mechanisms involved in the relationship between artist, work and public.
The four projects correspond to four series in which Dora García has been researching for some time and the proposals presented in this exhibition represent an update of these series, as well as the incorporation of new readings.
The projects are “Si pudiera desear algo” (from the series “Frases de oro”) in which an inscription on the wall invites us to reflect and enter into a personal and intimate interpretation. “Luchadorxs” (from the series “Posters”) is an installation that recovers the memory through 18 posters made with photographs and slogans of the feminist movement.
Another artwork is “Los Romeos” which incorporates a large poster, activated by a performance on the opening day, inspired by the “Romeo Method” used by the secret services of the German Democratic Republic during the Cold War.
The itinerary concludes with “The Bug“, a collective and relational work in which visual arts, performing arts and literature converge, made up of nine blackboards intervened by the artist, which will be activated during November through a specific programme of performances.
Also, as an activity linked to the exhibition, the film “Amor Rojo” (in development, 2023-2024) based on the historical figure of Alexandra Kollontai, feminist activist, Marxist and Soviet revolutionary, will be presented.
Pilar Rubí, curator of Dora García’s exhibition, explains that “through research processes, the artist updates her work by incorporating a contextualised reading that includes, for example, images of the latest 8M protests in Palma, and which reveals a constant in her work: the attempt to understand the relationship between artistic practice and political practice”.
The exhibition “Dora García. Romeos, luchadors e insecto” can be visited at the Museum’s Exhibition Hall A from 22 September 2023 to 4 February 2024.
