Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma presents “Tehran Spleen. Poetry in Prose”, a project by Nuria Marqués that reflects, from a personal and intimate perspective, on the acceptance of a series of stereotypes and cultural representations imposed in the West, based on the work that the artist made during an artistic residence in Tehran in 2018.
The exhibition, curated by Catalina Joy, opens to the public on October 22 from 7:00 p.m. with all safety and hygiene measures and will be on view until February 28, 2021 on Floor 1 of Es Baluard Museu.
“Tehran Spleen. Poetry in Prose” shows a set of drawings as a personal diary of her stay in Tehran in 2018, when she traveled for an artistic residence. When she arrived in the capital of Iran, she was faced with the need to build a new research methodology to adapt to a new reality. On the other hand, the exhibition also presents research material and a fold-out publication with texts by Mamen García and Audí that allow to deepen, from a subjective point of view, the keys to the trip.
In this way, the artist shows her own version of the country, which arises ” as a result of the emotions caused by the dichotomy between what she supposedly knew and what she perceived”, according to the curator. All the drawings, converted into posters of a single size, are presented under a symmetrical standardization and intensity that pursue the aesthetics of the propaganda of totalitarian regimes.
In this sense, Catalina Joy explains that ” The Menorcan creator flees from the most intransigent stereotypes while, at the same time, she questions the limits of human communication through her own experience: how to approach the other and otherness when the codes are not evident?” Thus, Nuria Marqués’ project explores the opportunity to build another look, and move away from the unique story – according to Chimamanda Adichie’s approach.
With this exhibition, which has the collaboration of the Institut d’Estudis Baleàrics and El Corte Inglés, Es Baluard Museu reinforces the line of research focused on giving visibility to local mid-career creators: Nuria Marqués (Ciutadella, Spain, 1975) is a visual artist who has exhibited her work in solo and collective exhibitions both nationwide and international, which include the shows in Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma, Museu de Menorca, CAAM of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, CAC of Malaga, Galeria Maior, Palma, MAC Santiago de Chile. It is also remarkable her participation in fairs and biennials such as Art Brussels, Biennal Turku, Pulse Miami, ArtCologne, ARCO or Bienal Sur.
Further, she has been a resident artist at El Basilisco (Buenos Aires), Hangar.org (Barcelona), Center d’Art i Natura (Lleida) and Kooshk (Tehran). Her work is part of public and private collections, such as Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma, CAC Málaga, Col.lecció Testimoni La Caixa, Fundació Sa Nostra, Coca Cola Foundation and Banco del Espirito Santo, among others.
