EL GEST MULTIPLICAT: CERÀMIQUES DE PICASSO

“El gest multiplicat: ceràmiques de Picasso" (The multiplied gesture: ceramics by Picasso) is an exhibition that brings together, for the first time, over 150 ceramic pieces by the Malaga-born artist from between 1847 and 1971. The pieces have been rigorously selected from the Es Baluard Collection and important private Mallorcan collections that offer a highly significant view of the artist’s intense work in the area of this discipline.

It was in the year 1947, in Vallauris, that Picasso came into contact with ceramics, beginning work in the Madoura pottery belonging to Suzanne and Georges Ramié. By 1949 Picasso had already organized his own workshop in a former perfume factory in the same town. The most intense phase of his work in the field of ceramics took place here during the period 1974-1954.

For the artist, clay as a raw material and the modification and glazing of it as a work method signified the discovery of a new language, full of artistic possibilities. Picasso applied the same themes to his ceramics – both for flat surfaces and three-dimensional shapes – as he did to canvas or paper. Thus a universe populated by fauns, doves, women’s faces, minotaurs or bullfighters comes to life, decorating plates, plaques, platters, pots and jugs.
