L'arquitecte i l'emperador d'Assíria

L'arquitecte i l'emperador d'Assíria (The architect and the Syria's emperor) is considered one of Fernando Arrabal's classic. It fiercely critics the power and the breakdown between human beings and nature. The play tells the story of the architect, who lives alone on a desert island in harmony with nature. A plane crash takes bringing there the Emperor of Assyria. He focuses on re-educate the architect it in the values of a hierarchical society.

The play, written in 1966, shows the crisis of values in Western society. The actions carried out by character of the emperor confus the architect in order to remain in power.

Jeroni Obrador has introduced, in this adaptation, comical values in order to emphasise the "theatrical distancing, so the viewer may be more critical for the function". There are allusions throughout the play to the current president of Syria and the power of the Catholic Church.

According to Obrador: "This work aims to make the audience laugh but surprised viewers maybe aren't able to. They could never forget this comedy in which the struggle between Western neurosis and nature will walk together through the ridiculous human creation and their familiar, religious and sexual transgressions. We'll perhaps simply laugh at ourselves".

Es Baluard, proposed by this group, wants to collaborate in supporting refugees from Syria through an event aimed to make visible those problems inherent in the contemporary world, some of which already have their presence in the museum through the works of the Joan Miró's Ubu series. The benefits of the event will be donated entirely to various NGO working from the outside to solve the serious problem of the humanitarian conflict in Syria.
