INAUGURATION OF THE REFORM OF THE PLAZA SANT FRANCESC XAVIER FROM THE ES BALUARD'S “CARTOGRAFIEM-NOS” PROJECT IDEAS

Today Tuesday, March 8 is the inauguration of the new Sant Francesc Xavier Square in  Palma, executed from the ideas of the pupils of the CP La Soledat (Palma) who participated in the Es Baluard's “Cartografiem-nos” project. During the event, the Mayor of Palma, Aina Calvo, will give back to the pupils the suitcase with the project delivered by them in 2008 (image).

The authors of this project were, specifically the pupils of 5º and 6º of primaria during the 2007-2008 course. The “Cartografiem-nos” project aims that the pupils reflect on the territory and, specifically, their neighborhood using the tools provided by the contemporary art. Considering this, these pupils studied the past of La Soledad and made a project which included how should be the future Sant Francesc Xavier Square.

The “Cartografiem-nos” project
The Es Es Baluard's Education Area directs this project from the 2006-2007 course involving six schools: CP Galatzó, Col·legi El Temple, CP La Soledat, Lycée Français, CP Verge de Lluc and CEIP Escola Graduada.

Recognized in 2008 by the UNESCO Chair as one of the most innovative educational projects in Spain, "Cartografiem-nos" promotes reflection on the land from the tools provided by contemporary art. Through visits to the museum, exploring the neighborhood and the school days with the Es Baluard’s education team, the participating students prepare an art project that reflects on the neighborhood where the school is located. During the 2010-2011 academic year, the center that participated in the “Cartografiem-nos” project is CEIP Escola Graduada (Palma).
